1 Peter 2:11-17 is one of the many places in the New Testament where believers are called pilgrims or sojourners. Our true citizenship lies in the Kingdom of God. It is where we derive our loyalties, values and ethical standards, rather than from the world. In this passage, Peter lays out many of these standards along with the implications of living by them. R.C. Sproul teaches. CDs are available in Smith Hall. Our study of 1 Peter continues this month with 1 Peter 1:22-25. This passage considers the role of obedience in the Christian life, and how that obedience, wrought in us by the Holy Spirit through the preaching of God's Word, proves itself in a love for truth and for our brothers and sisters in Christ. R.C. Sproul teaches. Copies are available in Smith Hall. Our study of 1 Peter continues this month with 1 Peter 1:13-21. The passage exhorts those made alive in Christ to prepare their minds with the knowledge of Christ in order to resist worldly patterns of thinking and be obedient to their Father's will. Peter's words here are compared with Paul's in Romans 12:2. R.C. Sproul teaches. Copies are available in Smith Hall. One of the most significant divisions in the church today is over the order of grace and faith in our salvation. Many people believe that faith comes first and that they trust in God's grace before they are born again. Yet Scripture gives us a different order. Our continuing study of 1 Peter examines the cause of faith as expressed in Peter's words. May this knowledge of the revelation of Jesus Christ result in our giving praise and glory and honor (1 Peter 1:7) to God. R.C. Sproul teaches. Copies are available in Smith Hall. This month we begin a study of 1 Peter, looking at this comforting letter to Christians in persecution and the soul-enriching doctrines about the person and work of Christ that it explains. Copies are available in Smith Hall. God's omnipotence is an idea that is hard to get into our bloodstream. Even Mary, the woman blessed to give birth to the Savior, had difficulty understanding this attribute of God when she asked the angel "how will this be? (Luke 1:34) after hearing that she would conceive and bear a son. Our study this month will look at God's omnipotence at work to bring His plan of salvation to pass for His people, a plan we remember this Christmas and every day of the Christian life. R.C. Sproul teaches. Copies are available in Smith Hall. Israel's conquest of Canaan under Joshua's leadership is a pivotal event in the Old Testament, but it also raises many theological questions. How could God command a holy war? Is the Church permitted to take up arms? Who is the commander of the army of the Lord (Joshua 5:13-15)? Our study this month will seek to provide biblical answers to these and many other questions. R.C. Sproul teaches. Copies are available in Smith Hall. Understanding true Christian character would be difficult without the teaching and example of the apostle Paul. He endured much persecution in his lifetime on account of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, yet he did not suffer passively nor bitterly. Instead, he remained joyful during his various periods of imprisonment, even as he wrote letters to encourage the churches to rejoice in the Lord and to establish them in true doctrine. R.C. Sproul teaches. Copies are available in Smith Hall. Ligoneer Ministries: Table Talk
This month's issue highlights the history of the Church at the end of the First Millennium, when much of European society lived in fear of terrorists (then it was the Vikings), moral corruption rocked the Church hierarchy, and many expectantly awaited the end of the world. Sound familiar? Daily studies continue our overview of the Old Testament, focusing specifically on the first five of the Ten Commandments. Copies are available from the publications rack (now temporarily in Smith Hall). Sanctification is God's will for every child of God (1Thes 4:3). While faith assures us that in Christ's death and resurrection we are positionally set apart and declared righteous, the Spirit further enables our ongoing repentance, faith and obedience as we learn to die to sin and live for Him. Daily studies continue our exploration of Old Testament themes with a focus on the various offerings and their purposes. Copies are available in the Narthex publications rack. The pace of technological change in our culture is mind-boggling. It seems daily we are bombarded with demands to try/embrace another new communications technology/social media to bring the world to our very fingertips, or at least to better connect us with our friends. This issue explores aspects of the changing techno-culture on the Church and Christians, and the eternal call that must retain our focus. Daily studies continue our exploration of Old Testament themes with a focus on worship, and include a study on the names of God. Copies are available in the Narthex publications rack. Anglican Bishop of Durham N.T. Wright is a hugely popular and influential churchman in our day, having publicly defended the historical facts of Christianity's origins from those who would ascribe mythical and/or psychological origins to much of the New Testament. Yet his statements about Paul's view of justification have stirred much controversy in the church. This special issue features articles from several trusted church leaders engaging Wright's words on this topic and explaining why the concern is a vital one for the church. Our hope is that it will help readers to understand the precious truth of justification by faith alone and will equip them to better defend it. Daily studies continue our examination Old Testament covenants and themes. Copies are available in the Narthex publications rack. This issue examines anxiety and its remedy for Christians: trust in God's sovereignty to work al things for good for those who love God, who are called according to His purpose (Rom 8:28 ). This first issue of 2010 begins a new series for daily study, a thematic and biblical-theological study of the Old Testament. Copies are available from the publications rack in the Narthex. We in the Church have celebrated 2009 as the 500 th anniversary of John Calvin's birth, while many in our society have been making much of 2009 as the 200 th anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth. This issue is intended to help us become more familiar with the issues surrounding Darwin and his theories on the origins of life so that we might be able to thoughtfully engage these ideas from a Christian perspective, and so influence others to Christ. Daily studies begin an examination of 2 Timothy, and include in addition a section on Repentance . Copies are available in the Narthex publications rack. We Christians live a paradoxical existence. We live as those who are declared by God to be truly righteous while we daily confess our sin to Him and seek His forgiveness. We know the Kingdom of God has come, while we experience a society in apparent moral decay. Yet we are neither dismayed nor delusional, for we live in the knowledge of the already and the not yet explored in this issue of Tabletalk. Daily studies conclude our examination of 2 Timothy, and include in addition a section on Holy Scripture. Copies are available in the Narthex publications rack. This month's issue examines hypocrisy in the Church and why we ought not to be complacent about it. Daily studies finish up our examination of Paul's letter to Titus, and include in addition a section on Justification by Faith Alone . Copies are available in the Narthex publications rack. |
